Richard was the son of Joseph Bilton & Ann Morrit, Joseph born Cundall, North Riding, Co Yorkshire, England. Richard's ancestry can be traced back to the Bilton's of Hampsthwaite, a branch of which moved to Sutton Forest, thence Easingwold and thence to the area of Crambe, all in North Yorkshire. Refer to the link above "Bilton's of Easingwold & Malton" for Richard's ancestry back to the mid 1500s.

William Metcalfe, 1832-1845
1. Richard Bilton (s/o Joseph, s/o Robert, s/o Robert),[4,25,28,150,194] born 1822,[7,28,30,67,177,273] Whitewell (Whitwell On The Hill),[273] Co Yorkshire, England,[12,28,30,67,177] baptised 20/9/1822, St Michael, Crambe, North Riding, Co Yorkshire, England.[200] {Father not listed on baptism, but father's name given on emigration record, dated 1844} Died 24/4/1902, 18 Ivy Street, Darlington, Redfern Municipality, Sydney, NSW, Australia (80yo).[4,30,137] Cause of death was heart disease & senile decay of two months duration.[30] M. W. Loveridge was the medical attendant, last seeing Richard on 12/4/1902.[30] The informant was his son, Charles Henry Bilton of Ivy St, Darlington, Sydney, NSW.[30] Buried 25/4/1902, Wesleyean Cemetery, Rookwood, Sydney, NSW, Australia, Joseph Medcalf was the undertaker.[30] Fred Colwell, a Wesleyean minister, officiated and Henry Robinson & Sidney B. Medcalf were the witnesses.[30] Resided 1841, Rillington, near Malton, East Riding, Co Yorkshire, England ('Belton').[199] Resided 1844, Wharram-le-street, East Riding, Co Yorkshire.[273] Emigrated to Australia on the 'William Metcalf', arriving 13/3/1844.[198,273,274] According to his passenger record, Richard was single, a native of Whitwell, Yorkshire, s/o Joseph, a labourer, and Ann Bilton, he was 21yo, of good health, literate & Church of England.[198,273] Upon embarking he was described as being "likely to be useful" in the colony.[198,273] Leonard Hodgson of Whitewell certified his baptism.[273] Charles Robert Coff, surgeon, of Malton, certified Richard's health.[273] T. W. Rivis of Wharram-le-street, near Malton, East Riding, Co Yorkshire, Richard's employer prior to his emigration, certified his character.[273] {In the 1841 census Rivis' are to be found in Rillington & Westow. Westow is close to Whitewell whilst Rillington is near Wharrand-le-street} Thomas Cawood of Duggleby, near Malton, East Riding, Co Yorkshire, also certified his character.[273] H. Willoughby, magistrate, of Birdsall, near Malton, East Riding, Co Yorkshire, and Rev. Robert Ellis of North Grimston, East Riding, Co Yorkshire certified the details given on his emigration record.[273] {Birdsall & North Grimston are both within 5km of Wharram-le-street} Richard was a bounty immigrant, with a bounty of £18 14s, and upon arrival he was placed in the service of Charles Smith of Sydney, NSW, Australia.[274] Arrived in Sydney, 13/3/1844,[7,30,67] on the "William Metcalfe" as an assisted immigrant.[7,67] Richard was a protestant by religion, could read and write, his occupation was given as "farm labourer" and his bounty was £18,14s, the standard bounty per person for the William Metcalfe.[67] The William Metcalfe was captained by Master Edward Philipson.[67] Richard's listed occupations were: Farm servant/labourer, 1844.[198,273,274] Goldminer, Golden Point, Sofala, NSW, 1857,1860.[28,29] Drayman, 1854,1877.[177,178] Occupation listed as Foreman on son's marriage certificate, 1882,[25] & daughter's marriage certificate in 1883.[150] Yard manager (death certificate of son, Richard Jr).[194]
Married 1st Mary Hannah Laws, 4/8/1845, Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, York Street, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[4,12,32] Marriage was performed by John McKenny & witnessed by George Grecian & Isabella Donaldson.[32] Mary, a bounty immigrant, arrived Botany Bay, Sydney, Australia on the "Elizabeth" in 20/1/1844.[37] {According to [137] the Elizabeth arrived 29/4/1844} She was a protestant and could read & write.[37] Mary, d/o John & Hannah,[4,12,179] born 1826, Co Middlesex, England,[37] & died 1857,[4,12,137,179] Golden Point, (Turon River), Sofala,[137] Bathurst district, NSW, Australia.[4,12]
Married 2nd Hannah Carroll,[12,25,29,30,177,194] 4/10/1857, Christ Church, Church of England, Sofala, NSW, Australia.[4,28,29,30,177,192] {Date taken from marriage certificate. Birth cerificate of son, Richard Jr,[28] gives DOM as 4/9/1857, [137] gives DOM as 12/10/1857} Richard was a widower and Hannah a spinster.[29] At the time of the marriage both resided Golden Point, parish of Sofala, NSW, Australia.[29] The marriage was performed by Henry Andrew Palmer & the witnesses were John & Agnes Poole.[29] "The consent of Joseph Walford, Esquire, a magistrate appointed to consent to the marriage of minors in certain cases, was duly obtained to the marriage of Hannah Carroll with Richard Bilton, the said Hannah Carroll being under the age of twenty one years, her parents being dead, and having no lawfully appointed guardians".[29] Hannah Carroll,[12,25] was born c.1838,[28,40,177,192] Co Limerick, Ireland.[28,177] {Hannah's death certificate gives her place of birth as Co Derry, however the birth certificate for her son, Henry, gives her place of birth as Co Limerick. Hannah was the informant on Henry's birth certificate.[177] Hannah herself is presuambly a more reliable source for her place of birth than the informant on her death certificate (another son). A search of surviving Co Limerick baptisms on Rootsireland has failed to find Hannah's baptism, indicating the records from the parish she was baptised no longer exist} Her parents were John & Catherine, both having died before 4/10/1857.[29] {And probably before 3/2/1857 when she emigrated to Australia} Died 3/6/1904 (66yo), 10 Ivy Street, Darlington, Redfern registration district, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[4,137,192] Cause of death was apoplexy, 3 weeks duration {'apolplexy is an obsolete medical term referring to a death following a seizure, often due (but not limited) to a stroke, aneurysm or heart attack}.[192] The informant was her son, Charles H. Bilton, of Ivy St, Darlington.[192] Buried 6/6/1904, Methodist Section, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[192] Church of England, 1857.[40] Dressmaker, 1857.[40] Literate.[40] 'Anna' arrived Sydney, 1857, on the Golconda at the age of 18.[40,192] The Golconda, under the command of Master Joseph Francis, departed 3/2/1857 from Liverpool, England, and arrived 2/6/1857, Sydney, NSW, with 177 adult male passengers, 125 adult female passengers, 55 boys and 36 girls, all emigrants.[41] {According to her death certificate Hannah arrived in NSW between mid 1857 and mid 1858,[192] since she married 4/10/1857, she clearly arrived no later than 9/1857,[29] indicating she arrived in Australia mid 1857. From immigration records there were 4 Hannah/Ann's who arrived in that period, three of whom arrived with their parents, none of whom were John. The remaining Ann arrived on the Golconda and was presumably the Hannah who married Richard Bilton. The passenger record gives her place of birth as Devon, however the handwriting is unclear. In the absence of any other possible candidate, the stated place of birth is presumably an error, likely due to a strong Irish accent} Cause of death was apoplexy, 3 weeks duration {'apolplexy is an obsolete medical term referring to a death following a seizure, often due (but not limited) to a stroke, aneurysm or heart attack}.[192] The informant was her son, Charles H. Bilton, of Ivy St, Darlington.[192] Hannah was buried 6/6/1904, Methodist Section, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[192] {It has been claimed by some researchers that Hannah was the daughter of John Carroll & Catherine Cotter, baptised 1844, Co Cork, Ireland (IGI), which conflicts with available Australian records. Carroll was an extremely common surname in Ireland at the time - there were 121 John Carroll's listed in Co Limerick in the Griffith's Valuation Index for 1853, any one of whom could have been Hannah's father, assuming he was still alive in 1853 and that he was a land owner (Griffith's only listed land owners, not tenants). There were also at least four Catherine Carroll's in the Griffith's index (covering the possibility that her mother was still alive and a land owner)}

North Grimston (or North Grimstone) is a parish in the East Riding, Co Yorkshire, 4 miles SE of Malton. It is situated in the vicinity of the Yorkshire Wolds. The church, an ancient stone structure consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and western tower, is dedicated to St. Nicholas & has a large stone font of Saxon origin, carved from scriptural subjects. The arches are adorned with Norman carvings. The chancel arch is Norman or possibly Saxon. The church was restored in 1886. Population of the parish in 1821 was 139. In 1891 the population was 154 & the parish covered 1,564 acres.[GenUKI] Wharram le street is a parish in the East Riding, Co Yorkshire, 6 miles SE of Malton, containing the townships of Wharram le street, Raisthorpe, Thixendale, and Towthorpe. In the mid 1800s Wharram le street consisted of several farmhouses & the parish church. The Church, dedicated to St Mary, is a small ancient structure, of stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a western tower. The font is ancient, and probably belongs to the Norman period. The church was restored in the early 1860s. Population of the parish in 1821 was 127, barely changed in 1891 when the population was recorded as 133. The parish covers an area of 2,071 acres. In the late 1800s the Rivis Trustees have land in the parish. The Roman road or street passed through Wharram, and hence the addendum to its name.[GenUKI]

The William Metcalfe, built in 1834, Sunderland. Registered London to H. Metcalfe. 447 tons and less than 30 metres long. The William Metcalfe made many trips to the colonies of New South Wales and Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) from the mid 1830's to the mid 1840's, transporting initially convicts, and then later Bounty immigrants. The vessel was one of the first to carry Bounty immigrants. On Richard Bilton's voyage, the ship sailed for Cork, Ireland from Gravesend, London on 4/11/1843, touched at Plymouth on 16/11/1843, and then set sail from Cork, Ireland on 24/11/1843 direct to Sydney, arriving in Port Jackson on 14/3/1844 under Captain Edward B. Philipson. In addition to 28 crew, there were 8 passengers and 233 "Bounty Emigrants" on board. Additionally, the vessel would have carried cows, sheep, pigs and poultry used during the voyage to provide fresh milk, eggs and meat. Five of the emigrants died on the voyage and were buried at sea. Although built as a full-rigged sailing vessel, at a subsequent refit in 1852 the vessel was changed to a barque. In 1858, it is recorded in the Lloyds Register that she was “wrecked” but no details given.[William Metcalfe] The Wesleyan Centenary Chapel, on York Street, Sydney, was built between 1840-1844 & opened for worship 14/2/1844. The original building, of stone and brick, was built along classical lines and in addition to the main worship hall had a large gallery and additional school rooms for children. Built with a seating capacity of 1200, by 1883 the church had just 18 members. A new direction & leader were chosen and in 1885 the church was demolished and a larger building erected, the Centenary Hall, later known as the Central Methodist Mission (now the Wesley Central Mission.[Sydney in 1848, Wesley Mission] 199 Burnett Street Redfern no loner exists. The entire odd number side of Burnett St has been demolished and replaced with modern terrace dwellings.

Sofala is a former gold mining town about 245km north west of Sydney and 45km north of Bathurst in the Turon River valley. It was created by the goldrush precipitated by the discovery of gold in the area in February 1851. By June a tent city has spread across the valley and both the Royal Hotel and a General Store had been built. When the local landowner realised he would never move the miners off his land he became a butcher and started selling mutton (more money was to made selling produce to miners at exorbiant prices than actually mining the gold). By November a travelling journalist could report: 'For the most part, Sofala presents to the spectator a strange jumble of tents of every possible shape: canvas, calico, slab and bark huts, bough gunyahs and nondescripts. Among the medley, two circuses are conspicuous. Stores of every possible description and containing varieties of merchandise are everywhere, embellished with placards announcing the best gold prices available. Shoe makers and blacksmith establishments boasting a large number of visitors.' The goldfield was short-lived with the population peaking at 10,000 in September and dropping to 5,000 by Christmas. It was a ramshackle temporary town with dozens of pubs and, at its height, an estimated 500 illegal sly grog shops. In 1852 there was a brief altercation between miners and police over mining licenses but it did not amount to outright rebellion. The miners caved in and the license fees were retained, although drastically lowered soon after. By 1853 visitors were describing the town as little more than 'wood huts or as they term them shingle, weatherboard, houses and tents. There were many tents scattered along the river.' The fortune of the town was all too brief. By May 1854 there were less than 500 diggers on the field and by 1855, with new gold discoveries occurring at Wattle Flat, Sofala was in decline. By 1856 there were only 325 males and 203 females living in bark huts and working the goldfields in Sofala. Even though the town was beginning to reduce in importance the goldrush had established a substantial infrastructure. In 1866 a traveller described the town as 'There was a post and money order office, a telegraph office, a hospital, court of petty sessions, district court, police camp, gold commissioner's camp, three churches (Anglican, Roman Catholic, Wesleyan), two denominational and five private schools, two hotels (the Sofala Inn and the Barley Mow), a number of public houses and several extensive stores. There was a booking office at the Barley Mow for Cobb & Co, where coaches could be caught for Bathurst, Orange, Lambing Flat and Forbes. There are branches of the Savings Bank and Australia Mutual Provident Society in the township.' By the 1871 census the total population of the town was 644. While mining was still central to the success of the town, miners were covering a greater area and finding smaller deposits. The history of the town in the twentieth century has been one of constant decline as the gold became increasingly hard to extract. In 1948 all commercial gold mining in the district finished. It had lasted for 92 years. The town survives today on tourism and is considered Australia's oldest surviving gold town. The town remains virtually untouched since the late 1800's, apart from the hand of time. A few buildings remain in use, in varying states of repair (or disrepair), many others are slowly decaying.[SMH Traveller, David Powell, 'Sofala Days & Turonites' by John Rule pub. 1980]

Grenfell is a country town in the Central West of NSW, 370km west of Sydney. Originally a goldmining town known as Emu Creek and renamed in honour of John Grenfell, Gold Commissioner at Forbes, who had been killed in 1866 when bushrangers attacked a stagecoach on which he was travelling. Grenfell is most famous for being the birthplace of Henry Lawson, arguably Australia's most loved and famous poet & writer, who was born on the goldfields. Gold was discovered in 1866. Miners and bushrangers soon flocked to the area, including the infamous Ben Hall - in one robbery Hall's gang stole over 2700 ounces, worth millions today (and never recovered or spent). By 1870-1871 it was producing more gold than any other town in NSW, over 40,000 ounces of gold a year. However by the mid-1870s gold was in decline {It would appear James moved from the goldfields of Sofala to those of Grenfell when the pickings at Sofala became too poor, although like his father's arrival at Sofala, James' arrived in Grenfell in the dying stages of the gold rush there}. Within 6 months of the discovery of gold there were 10,000 people on the fields and tents and bark huts and a business centre grew along the banks of Emu Creek. By 1873 the population had dropped to 1873. By the early 1880s wheat dominated the local economy. The present Holy Trinity, Grenfell, was built 1877-1879. It replaced a previous wooden building erected in 1867.[Wikipedia, SMH Travel, Grenfell History]

1.2. Joseph Bilton,[13,30,164] (s/o Richard) born 1851,[12] Moorefield, Sydney,[137] & baptised 1851, Wesleyan Methodist, Sydney, NSW, Australia.[4] {According to [12] was born Golden Point, near Sofala, however note was baptised in Sydney. [12] does not cite a source} Died 1878, Wellington, NSW, Australia.[4,12] In 1872 was a gold miner at Golden Point, Sofala, NSW, Australia.[12,164] Married Frances Foskett,[13,137] 16/8/1873, All Saints Cathederal, Bathurst, NSW, Australia.[4,12,137] Witnesses were John Dwyer and Lily Frappell.[12] Frances born 6/4/1852, Newington, London, England.[12] Frances married 2nd William Bone, 1885, Bathurst, NSW, Australia.[4] Resided 1872, Golden Point, Sofala, NSW.[164]

Joseph Bilton, born 1876, Orange, NSW, Australia.[4,12]

Like his brother, James, Joseph appears to have stayed on in Sofala after his father moved back to Sydney and when the Sofala gold fields had dried to the point of offering little hope of a return, Joseph moved onto another gold field. Joseph died in the Wellington district, exactly where has yet to be determined. Whilst the town of Wellington was never a gold rush town, the area was the site of the first discovery of gold in Australia and there were several gold fields in the district, including that of Ophir (where the first gold was found & which started the second major gold rush in the world after California), shown below. If Joseph was not at Ophir (it was virtually mined out by the late 1850's), he would have been at a nearly indistinguishable mining camp after he left Sofala in the mid 1870's. There is no direct route from Sofala to Wellington. The shortest route passes through Bathurst, thence through Orange and onto Wellington. Note that Joseph's 2nd son's birth was registered at Orange. The Ophir gold field was about 25km north of Orange, on one of the roads from Orange to Wellington.

He was fortunate enough to serve in various theatres of the war, including UK & Russia, early in hostilities and has been unhappy since returning to the less interesting but necessesary 'home' duty - in short a good officer who is now 'browning off'."[423]

Was a contestant in the 1945 'Red Cross Popular Girl' competition to raise funds for the Red Cross, organised by the Labour Council of NSW, representing the Australian Railways Union. Despite the competition being a union run, the railways management gave enthusiastic support, both Tom Hartigan (Commissioner for Railways) and Reg Winsor (Chief Staff Superintendent) took an active interest. Else was moved to a clerical position in the headquarters building in Sydney, and on numerous occasions was called to Winsor’s office to brief him on the competition. Else was given paid time off to travel widely to attend fund-raising dances in Sydney and country areas. Together with the sale of the tin plate badges, the dances were the principal method of fund raising. The competition ended with the 21 contestants attending a gala dance at Sydney Town Hall on 11 July 1945. The winner was Joan Jupp, representing the Clothing Trades Employees’ Union. Else came second. A total of £18,047 was handed to the Duchess of Gloucester (Red Cross patron and wife of the governor-general Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester). Else left the railways in December 1945 when her fiancé, who had served as an RAF bomber pilot, returned to Australia.[584]
"Trade Unions Help Red Cross. Popular Girl Contest Raises £18,047. Miss Joan Jupp, winner of the Trade Union Red Cross 'Popular Girl Contest, will hand a cheque for £18,047 to the Duchess of Gloucester for the Red Cross Society at the gala dance at the Sydney Town Hall on July 11 to celebrate the closing of the contest. The Clothing Trades Employees' Union, which Miss Jupp represented, raised £7,184/1/8, representing 1,124,180 votes. Miss Elsie Bilton (Australian Railways Union) narrowly defeated Miss Melba Milton (Hotel and Club Employees Union) for second place. Fourth, fifth, and sixth places were won by Miss Val Kelly (Boot Industry), Miss Joan Russell (Municipal), and Miss Lily Chee (Meat Industiy). A special prize will go to Miss Nessie Carlin (Sugarworkers), who raised the most money in proportion to the membership of her union. The keen intetest taken in the contest is evident in the number of penny votes cast, 4,331,511. The secretary of the Trade Unions Appeal, Mr A. W. Thompson, said last night that the expenses involved in raising the money amounted to only one per cent of the gross takings. The secietary of the Clothing Trades Employees' Union, Mr P. Fallon, said the union covered all the expenses associated with Miss Jupp's campaign, the success of which reflected the loyalty of both employers and employees in the clothing industry.(SMH 5/6/1945)"[583]
