Jarmey and Germaine were used interchangably in Co Norfolk.[655] Some of the many known variations of the name include Germy, Jermei, Jermye, Jerma, Jermie, Jarmy, Jannye, Jeremy, Jerimey, Germa, Germany, Germaine, Germain, Jermeny, Jermey, Jarma, Jarmany, Jermany, Jermay, Jermey and Jermi.[655] Several possibilities have been suggested as to the origin of the name. One suggestion is that it is an old English form of Jeremiah, either a christian name becomming a surname or meaning "son of Jeremiah".[655] In the 18th century most Jarmey's or Jermey's in England could be found in the counties of Norfolk & Suffolk with a few families living in London. The name was rare elsewhere in England.[655] James may have been the James, s/o John & Elizabeth, baptised 4/2/1735, St Mary in the Marsh, Co Norwich.[655]

Ann Germaine, born c.1769.[4,15] Baptised 1/10/1769, St Julian, Norwich, Co Norfolk, England.[655] Baptism also registered St Etheldreda, Norwich, Co Norfolk, England.[655] Died 2/3/1823, Windsor, NSW, Australia.[4,250] Buried 3/3/1823, Left section, Row 20, Plot 12,[619] St Matthew's Church of England, Windsor, NSW, Australia (Ann Howell, 53yo).[4,619] Ann was convicted 26/7/1790, Norwich City Assizes, Co Norfolk, England,[15,430] & sentenced to transportation for 7 years, then 20yo.[15] Transported to Port Jackson (Sydney), NSW, Australia on the "Mary Ann", departing 16/2/1791 & arriving 9/7/1791.[15,425,430,432] At the time of her death Ann had recieved her freedom by the expiration of her sentence.[250] Ann moved to Windsor after she parted with her second partner, Samuel Howell, in 1805.[425] In 1806 Ann Jormouyne, per Mary Ann, was listed as a concubine with 3 male and 2 female natural children.[432,433] The same year she was listed as a housekeeper living with Bishop Thompson.[425] In the 1811 muster Ann was listed as Samuel Howell's wife.[432] In 6/1811 Ann was on the list of people to receive land grants in the Hawkesbury district, in her own right (indicating she was the head of her household & did not have a partner at the time).[425] In 1814 Ann resided at Windsor, NSW, Australia,[425] with two children, listed as the 'wife of Samuel Howell',[430] listed as "off stores", that is she was purchasing (or growing) her own victuals & not relying on Government handouts.[432] In 1822 Ann was listed as being 'married' to J. Eager (not present).[22] {If J. Eager was the John Agar who died 1810, the change in her surname possibly reflects the awareness that Samuel Howell had acquired another 'spouse' & that she could no longer claim to be his 'wife'}
Partner Thomas B. Tambleton (no record of marriage, presumably a defacto relationship).[4,425] Thomas was a sailor on the 'Mary Ann'.[425] He appears to have remained with the ship when it returned to England.[425]
Partner 2nd Samuel Howell (no record of marriage, presumably a defacto relationship).[425,430,432] Samuel Howell & Ann (Germaine) were listed consecutively in the 1800 Muster (suggesting but not proving they were living together).[425] Separated 1805.[425] By March 1805 Samuel was advertising that he was no longer liable to Ann's debts (effectively an announcement of a defacto divorce):

"Notice: Samuel Howell gives this public notice that no person shall credit his wife on his Account as he will not be responsible for any debt she may contract. Sydney, March 10 1805.(Gazette 24/3/1805)"[442]
A similar notice was published the following month: "Notice: Samuel Howell gives this public notice that no person shall credit his wife on his Account as he will not be responsible for any debt she may contract.(Sydney Gazette 14/4/1805)"[432,442]

Partner 3rd Bishop Thompson (no record of marriage, presumably a defacto relationship).[425] {It is quite possible Ann knew Bishop prior to her transportation - they were both convicted on the same day at the Norwich City Assizes} Bishop Thompson was tried at Norwich, July 1790, and sentenced to 7 years transportation, arriving 28/8/1791 on the 'William & Ann'.[15,425] In 1799 Bishop was in the Hawkesbury district, NSW, Australia, where he was involved in an aboriginal shooting case.[425] In 1800 he was Free by Servitude and renting 20 acres from Palmer at Hawkesbury.[425] Bishop remained in the Hawkesbury area, gaining a land grant in 1821, and another in 1825 at Richmond.[425] By 1828, at the age of 52, he was a labourer to Peter Hough of Richmond.[425] No further record of him has been found.[425]
Partner 4th J. Eager.[425] Possibly the John Agar who arrived at Port Jackson in 1797 on the 'Britannia'.[425] John died 1810,[4,425] & burial registered St Phillip, Church of England, Sydney, NSW, Australia (42yo).[4] In 1806 John had a Ticket of Leave & was self-employed.[425] If John Agar/Eager was Ann's 4th partner, it would explain why at least some of her children with Samuel Howell returned to live with Samuel between 1810-1815.[425] The surname Eager (and variants including Egg) occured numerous times in connection with the family.[425] Hannah, d/o Ann Germaine & Samuel Howell, recorded her maiden name as Hannah Egg on the baptism of her son William Kippax in 1827.[425] According to [654] his name was James Edgar, a former convict (however this source contains many errors).[654]

Alexander emigrated to Australia from Leith, Scotland, departing 1/1/1824 & arriving Sydney 16/10/1824 on the "Portland".[622]

"On Saturday arrived the Australian Company's ship Portland, Captain William Snell, from Leith, which she left on lst of April, she touched at Rio da Janeiro, sailed thence on the 10th of July, and left the Derwent on the 3rd instant. Her cargo consists of sundries. No ships had arrived from England at the Derwent when she left. She brings the following passengers from Leith — Mr John Thompson, Mr. John Wallace, Mr W?? On 1/7/1823 Alexander aquired an allotment on Elizabeth Street, Sydney, of which he was still in possession in 1831:

In 1883 John was declared insolvent:

In 1906 was a witness in the trial of Frederick Burcher, John's employer, who was charged with 'perverting the course of justice' regarding the estate of Captain Lindfor:

"Alleged Conspiracy. Captain Lindfors' Estate - A Solicitor and others Accused. Evidence for the Defence - The accused committed for trial. Further evidence was taken at the Water Police Court yesterday, before Mr. Wilshire, S.M., in the case in which Frederick Burcher, 45, solicitor, Joseph John Rochester, 64, contractor, Alma White, 43, a married woman, and Constance Cato, 22, spinster, were charged with having in the month of January of last year, and on divers other days during the same year, unlawfully, amongst themselves, and with one Dorothy Reimer, conspired together to pervert the ends of justice against the peace of his Majesty the King, his crown, and dignity. Mr. Mant, of the Crown Law Department, appeared for the prosecution. Burcher conducted his own defence, and Mr. R H. Levien, M.L.A., appeared for the other defendants....
Mr Burchers case - John Wilkinson Camper, a law clerk in Mr Burcher's employ said that he had had upwards of 40 years' experince in legal work. He was in North Queensland in December, 1904. On April 17 witness found the transaction in regard to Lindfors will in progress. From that day to the present he was acquainted with all that was going on between Bircher and the other accused. Witness wrote all the documents under dictation of Burcher. He, in Burcher's presence and absence, had spoken to Mr Reimer, Mrs White, and Miss Cato, but he had no idea from the contents of the documents that there was anything wrong with the will...(SMH 12/1/1906)"[632]

"Lydia Paget and William Perry were indicted for feloniously assaulting Jane Preston, in the King's highway, on the 4th of October, for putting her in fear, and taking from her person and against her will, a shawl, value 1l. her property.
Jane Preston. On the evening in question, I had been to Covent Garden Theatre; I was returning in company with Mrs. Hill. In the narrow part of Rathbone-place, I was suddenly without any provocation knocked down by the prisoner Paget, with her fist; she struck me on the face; while I was on the ground, I was severely kicked and bruised; I was stunned by the blow I received on my face; she took the shawl from my shoulders as I lay; I had it round my shoulders very close, and she pulled it to get it away; she did get it away at last. I was raised from the ground by the witness Mrs. Hill, with the assistance of Jonas Parr.
Ann Hill. I was with Miss Preston, on this night coming from the Play with her. We were returning by Rathbone-place, and met three females; the prisoner was the inside one; the prisoner came suddenly and shoved Miss Preston down, and knocked her down; she had no instrument in her hand; it was with her fist. She then seized her shawl, and with the force of pulling it from her shoulder, she fell back herself. When she got up she went a little distance, and gave it to another person; I don't know who that person was; she was in my sight. I called the watch; the watchman was nearly at my elbow sooner than I expected, and when the prisoner came back, she used abusive language, and asked did I think she had got the property. The watchman came up, and he took her. I saw a young man of the name of Parr; be crossed the road of Rathboneplace; he came to my assistance. I know nothing of the lad that is there.
Jonas Parr. I am not acquainted with Paget; I am not acquainted with the boy Perry either. I remember being on the 4th of October in Rathboneplace; I remember Miss Preston calling out for the watch; I think she did, but I am not certain; I heard some noise and out-cry. I saw Paget attempt to take the shawl from: Miss Preston. I saw the begining of it; I was on the opposite side of the way. I saw Lydia Paget strike her on the face, which knocked her down, and as I afterwards discovered. gave her a black eye. They both fell, and I picked the lady up. When Paget was up. I told her to go away, and she said as how she would not, for she would have her b-y life. She took the shawl, and went to the corner, and gave it to William Perry. She went about four doors down; he put it into his bosom, and went across the road, across Soho-square. I saw Perry at the time Paget gave this blow and knocked Miss Preston down; he was then standing still; there were other women in the concern beside Paget; there were two other women; they did not appear to take any part in the assault; they stood until the shawl was taken; they went away directly. I don't know either of them. I was in a public-house at first having a drop of beer to myself; I work at labouring work. whatever I can get to do. I did not know the ladies before.
Paget's Defence. I was very much in liquor; I had been drinking with Jonas Parr, and he gave me the shawl, and shoved the lady down, and took her shawl off her neck, and gave it to the other lad Perry, who ran away with it.
Miss Hill. Re-examined. The boy Parr crossed the road from the other side to assist us.
-. I am the constable of the night. When Parr gave us information of Perry, we kept him all night, and we went in search of Perry the next morning, and found he had been taken for a misdemeanor the same morning. Parr swore to him.
