ATKINS ------ A genealogy of the ATKINS family of County Hertfordshire, England and Australia, from about 1720 to 1910 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Atkins's can be found in t-atkins.txt. Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. Redistribution of this material to a genealogical listing/service which resells or charges for access is also prohibited. This material is public domain, unless specified otherwise in the sources, and cannot, by international copyright law ("Intellectual Rights") be copyrighted by a third party. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 18/8/2006 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. Bedmond lies in the parish of Abbots Langley in south-eastern Hertfordshire, near St Albans. The parish was named after the Abbey at St Alban's, which orignally had jurisdiction over the parish. The parish is reputed to be the birthplace of Adrian IV, the only English pope, who was murdered four years after his election. King Richard II was also buried in the parish church, St Lawrence, althought the body was latter exhumed and moved to Westminster. Kings Langley is the parish immediately to the west of Abbots Langley (which is both the chief village of the parish and the parish itself), and is itself both the name of the parish and the chief village.[2] Syncombe is in present day Oxfordshire, just west of Cookley Green, roughly mid-way between Oxford and Reading. The IGI and UK VR's Indices only contain scattered records prior to 1760 for the Abbot's Langley area so it is not possible to take the line back much further than the 1700's. The following records taken from the IGI and the UK VR's indices refer to individuals who are almost certainly either ancestors or closely related to my line: * Helena Atkins, bap.1545, Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire. D/o John. * Richard Atkins, marr. Helena Cogdell, 1544, Abbots Langley, Herts. * Thomas Atkins, bap.1547, Abbots Langley, Herts. S/o Richard. * John Atkins, marr. Mary Rolph, 1659, Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. * John Atkins, marr. Mary Sweeten, 1731, Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. * Sarah Atkins, marr. Isaac Timberlake, 1729, Kings Langley, Herts. 8. Henry Adkins or Atkins, born about 1715, probably in or near the parish of Abbots Langley, Co. Hertfordshire, England.[1] Married Elizabeth Humphrey, 29/12/1737, Abbots Langley, Hertforshire.[2,3] Children of Henry Atkins and Elizabeth Humphrey:[1a] i. Daniel Atkins, born about 1740, Abbots Langley, Hertforshire.[1] Married unknown. Children: Mary Elizabeth (1765) of Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire.[4] ii. Joseph Atkins, born c.1745, Abbots Langley, Hertforshire.[1] Married Mary or Martha. Children: Rebecca (1768), John (1770),[5] Isaac (c.1770),[1] Nanny (1772), Ann (c.1778),[5] Fanny (1778) and Keziah (1780) of Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.[4,5] * iii. James Atkins, born c.1745/1750, Bedmond, Hertfordshire.[2] [1] Details estimated or taken from marriage and/or baptism of children. [1a] Baptism records have not been found for these children in the Abbots Langley parish registrars. Whether this means they were not baptised there or simply that the PR's are incomplete (a common occurance) is unknown. Henry and Elizabeth are the probable parents of these children, tho' this is unconfirmed. [2] Information researched by and/or passed on by Bronwyn Balfour, . Sources include the work of Rev. The goods and chattels of one Joseph Brown of Abbots Langley." George was a peddler and already owned a donkey. He stole Brown's from a farm yard, walked 20 km overnight and sold it the next morning. He was sentenced to 7 years imprisionment at Pentonville Prison. In 1844 he accepted a pardon on the condition he accepted exile to Australia. He departed 9/11/1844 from Woolwich, England with other "Pentonville Exiles" on the "Sir George Seymour", which arrived at Geelong, Victoria, Australia, 20/3/1845.[1] George eventually settled in the Winchelsea area, Victoria, Australia.[1] He died 1889 and was buried at Bambra, Victoria.[1] Married first Anne Wallace, 1853, Geelong, Victoria.[6] Ann was born in 1839, daughter of Michael Wallace,[7] and died 1881, Winchelsea, Victoria.[7] Children: George (1855), John Henry (1857), Albert (1858-1860), Charlotte (1859), William Ernest (1861-1883) & female (1863-1863) of Winchelsea, Victoria, Frederick William (1864-1866) & Edward Albert (1866) of Bambra, Victoria, Annie Margaret (1869), Jessie (1870), Agnes Ellen (1872), Albert Edward (1874), Lucy Gordon (1876-1882), Allen James (1879) & male (1881-1881) of Winchelsea, Victoria.[8] Married 2nd Louisa Maria Mulder, 1885, probably at Geelong, Victoria.[9] Children: Louisa Grace (1886) of Geelong, Victoria.[8] [1] Information researched by and/or passed on by Bronwyn Balfour, . [3] Joseph's death certificate gives his parents as "Joseph & Charlotte W" Atkins of County Herefordshire. [4] Some references give Joseph's year of birth as 1811. This is unlikely given the dates for John & Winifred's other children.[2,3, and see also [7] in the next section, Joshua's obituary].
