Last revision: 14/12/1999 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Sandwich is about 7-8 miles due east of Canterbury, in east Kent and 2-3 miles north of Deal. During the 11th - 13th centuries, Sandwich was one of the major English ports. Sandwich allied with the other four premier towns of South East England at the time to form "The Cinque Ports" an arrangement by which they were granted freedoms and privileges (like exemption from taxes when trading in other ports) in return for providing ships and seamen. Sandwich was among the first ten towns to appoint a Mayor (in 1213) and appropriated certain rights for the local government of the port and town.[1] Prior to 1650 the County Kent North's listed in the IGI are mostly found at Sandwich and in the area of North-West Kent roughly bounded by Greenwich, Maidstone and Sevenoaks, with most of the early entries at Dartford. There are also a few isolated entries at Dover and the Isle of Thanet. None of these, however, predate the Sandwich North's. The one pre-1500 North entry is at Sconington, which no longer appears to exist.[4] [1] Information sourced and supplied by Lesley Rich, [2] International Genealogical Index, LDS; 1994 edition, 1997 addendum (v.4.0). Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each generation. ************************************************* 14.
