TOSH ---- A genealogy of the TOSH family of Angus Shire, Scotland, England and Australia, from c.1600 to about 1990 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Tosh's can be found in t-tosh.txt. For the Toschoch's of Perthshire (and elsewhere), refer to the Toschoch charts. Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. Redistribution of this material to a genealogical listing/service which resells or charges for access is also prohibited. This material is public domain, unless specified otherwise in the sources, and cannot, by international copyright law ("Intellectual Rights") be copyrighted by a third party. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 23/8/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The Tosh family is not numerous and has been concentrated in the area known as Tayside, an area bordered by the Grampian's in the north, the Firth of Forth in the south and centred on the Firth of Tay. Firth being the Scottish equivalent of the Scandanavian "Fjord". Sizable numbers of Tosh's have appeared in Fife and Perth, but by far the majority have been in Angus. Prior to 1600, the only occurances of the name (or variants) that I have found have been at Monzie/Monzievaird in Perth and Dunfermline in Fife. In Fife the earliest record is for the birth of John, son of Thomas and "Sibbie" in 1581, while in Perth there are numerous linked events stretching back to 1430. In the 1640's there were a number of marriages at Dundee in Angus, with subsequent children and their descendents. The parish of Monzievaird lies just to the west of that of Monzie, NW and NE of Crieff, respectively. Just SE, about 1 mile from Monzie, was the old Graeme stronghold of Inchbrakie. The Inchbrakie Graemes can trace descent back to a daughter of Robert II, King of Scotland, and thence to Duncan, murdered by MacBeth. [Rob Graham, ] It is possible that the family originated in Perth and that the Dundee Tosh's arrived from there, possibly as a single family in the early 1600's. Indeed, the list of marriages and other events in the mid 1600's in Dundee can be readily accounted for by a single family, suggesting that their's was the first generation of the name in the area. Perth does border Angus and at least some Angus Tosh's can be traced back to Perth, such as Donald Tosh, who was born at Logierait in Perth and was living in Coupar Angus (in Angus) by 1701. Other shires that border with Perth also have early occurances of the name, Clackmannan (1620), Stirling (1670) and Kinross (1699). Prior to 1700 the records are patchy, so it has not been possible to establish a definite link between the Perth and Angus Tosh's, other than from sharing an unusual surname and similar christian names. Like many unusual surnames, there has been a wide variation in the spelling of the name. The earliest mention of the name with the spelling of Tosh (in Angus) was in 1649. Prior to that at least 20 variations on the name have been identified (over 60 including those first appearing after 1649). The oldest, and most prolific of these is Toshach (1430). Other early variations include Toscheach (1551), Tosheach (1558), Toshoche (1581), Toschoch (1596), Toshech (1596) and Tosche (1599). (Note: this refers to Scotland as a whole, not just Angus.) For the Toschoch's of Perthshire (and elsewhere), refer to the Toschoch charts. ************************************************* 13. James A.[21] Tosh, architect & surveyor,[9,22] born 7/12/1850, Otley, Yorkshire.[2,3,8,22] Following the death of his mother Harriet (nee Ingham) in 1866, he presumably spent a considerable amount of time in Otley, probably with maternal Aunt Elizabeth Freeman and her husband James, retired builder/mason (he was with them in the 1861 census).[11] He trained as an architect, probably in Otley as Otley museum has records of James Tosh as a party in land transactions in 1874-5, also an entry in a trade directory for 1875 as an architect at Station Road, Otley.[11] In 1874 and 1875 (and possibly earlier), James was living with James and Elizabeth (nee Ingham, his aunt) Freeman, Cambridge Lane, Otley, Yorkshire where he was presumably studying to be an architect with Mr. Marshall.[11] After the death of James Freeman in 1875, James (Tosh) resided at Station Rd, Otley, Yorkshire (during 1875).[11] In late 1875 James returned to London (presumably his studies had been completed) where he married and fathered his child. In 1879 James was again residing at Otley, where, with Alfred Marshall, he designed and built the "North Parade Board School", on the corner of North Parade and Cattle Market St, Otley, which today is "All Saints School".[11] The school was opened 8/11/1879.[11] James emigrated to Sydney, Australia, with his wife and son, on board the Lusitania as "second saloon" passengers; departed London 19/5/1879, arrived Sydney 11/7/1879.[2,4,8] In Sydney, James & his family resided at 19 Argyle St, Parramatta, a house that James himself designed and built,[12] and latter in Marsden St, Parramatta, NSW.[20] James was an architect[20] with the NSW Government's Architect Office[8] and (earlier?) a partner in Tosh & Robinson, an architectural firm.[15,21] While with this firm, James designed several churches in the Randwick area in the 1880's and was the second prize winner in a competition to design the future suburb of Kensington in the late 1880s.[15] James built churches in other areas including Leigh Memorial Church, Parramatta, the plans being completed 14/12/1883,[13] (plans for which remained in the family until the 1990's when they were donated to the church), St Albans, Rooty Hill (destroyed by fire in 1942) and another at Penrith, NSW.[14] James also built "Bellevue", 116 Rooty Hill Road South, Eastern Creek, currently the home of Elizabeth M. Lawson.[24,25] In 1885 James was involved in a serious accident whilst on a hunt with in the Cumberland Hunt Club, fracturing his elbow joint.[21] After his first wife's death, James moved and by the time of his second marriage was living at 35 Randle St, Sydney (Surry Hills).[22] Some time latter James and his 2nd wife moved - when he died, james was living at 364 Alfred St, North Sydney.[2,8] James died at home, 7/1/1918,[2,8,17] of cancer of the oesophagus & exhaustion, of which he had suffered at least a year, and was buried 8/1/1918 in the Roman Catholic section, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney,[8,19] section E, grave 2410.[19] James was previously presbyterian, his conversion to Catholicism presumably occured after his second marriage. James married firstly Clara Maria King, 27/12/1875 at St Johns, Hackney, London.[1,2,8,10] Clara was born 18/12/1842 in Kingsland or Shoreditch, London,[1-3] latter lived at Southgate, London,[2] died 19/12/1896 at 19 Argyle St, Parramatta, NSW,[1,2,5] and buried at Mays Hill Cemetery, Sydney.[5,6] Married 2nd Sarah Ann Atkinson, 27/12/1901, St Francis (Catholic), Haymarket, Sydney, NSW,[8,16,22] Rev. Arthur John Hogan offiating and witnesses were John Anthony Bunosious & Mary Empson.[22] According to [19] Sarah was a widow, having previously married a Mr Burrows, however the marriage certificate indicates she was a spinster, the daughter of William Atkinson and Mary Piles,[22] born 1861,[19,22] Sofala, NSW.[22] Sarah died 1940, Ashfield, Sydney,[18] and was buried 3/8/1940, Catholic Section, Rookwood Cemetery, in the same grave as James.[19] At the time of marriage Sarah was living with James.[22] Children of James Tosh and Clara Maria King: * i.
