Mersham is in east Kent (England), about 6 kilometres south-east of
Ashford  on the A20 (London to Folkestone & Dover). Willesborough is
near Mersham. Kingsland is a suburb of London, now marked by a subway
station, in the east of the district of Islington and just north of
the city centre. Locations marked WA or NSW are in Australia. All
other locations are in England.

According to family tradition passed down in several branches of the
William Back/Ann Eastes family, Sir George Edward Back, who helped map
Canada's North-West passage, is closely related. I have been unable to
establish this either way. However, the family of William and Ann were
noted for their marintine connections.

Probably unrelated to my Back's, however note the earliest appearance of Charles
was at Ashford, Kent, around the time my Back's were in that town. Charles
and his family moved from Ashford to Molash St Peter (1814-1817), next appearing
in Badlesmere (1822-1835) and then appearing in Sheldwich in 1845. At that time
Charles (and his sons) were listed as being of the parish of Selling(e). Son William
was born 1820 (parentage from marriage record), his baptism however has yet to be
found and would place Charles between 1818-1821. Possibly another child was born in
this period.

This family appears in Sheldwich in the 1760's. There is no known connection with
the previous family which appeared in Sheldwich in the 1840's. By the 1840's the
following family had all but dissapeared from Sheldwich. The PR extracts in [29]
unfortunately only go back to 1813. Fortunately the IGI has coverage up to c.1800.
An Angelica Back married 1784 in Preston. Is she related to Spratt who married 20
years earlier in the same village? There are only a small handful of PR entries for
Back's in Preston, so the family was likely not native there. Despite the unusual
name, no earlier trace of Spratt has been found.

Ambrose, John, William and Peter are all of the same generation and all appear in
Dover around the same time. With one exception all in the next generation either
died young or left Dover. With a single exception, all Back's in Dover in 1881 are
from other families that moved to Dover in the later part of the 19th century. There
was also a Mary Back who married a Peter Bunton in 1779, Dover. This is a year before
the birth of Peter, below. Could this be the origin of his name? If related, Mary could
be an older sibling, possibly born between 1755-1760. There were also a Mary and Sarah
Back, both marrying in the late 1790's, also in Dover. These are more likely candidates
for siblings of Peter, which would suggest two generations with Ambrose, Mary and William
being of the earlier generation and Peter, John, Mary and Sarah of the younger. If this
scenario is right, then the father of the latter four is an unknown brother of Ambrose
and William (both married too recently to be the father of Peter etc). Naming patterns
suggest a possible name for the unknown back could be John, born maybe around 1750.
Pending the release of more Dover PR's prior to 1800 or the location of this family
elsewhere in Kent before the 1780's nothing concrete can be determined other than there
is a strong chance of a close family relationship between the Back's listed below.
